7 fitness experts give habits to break away from...today
So this week I reached out to fitness experts again and asked the following question:
“What is one bad fitness habit you often see that people should break today?”
As usual the responses were phenomenal:
2)
"Stop making your strong
muscles stronger, and your weak muscles weaker! If you are only using
machines to do strength training you're creating a larger muscular
imbalance than you had to start with. ... If you are using
a machine to do - chest press, your strong side is pushing a
greater majority of the weight than your weak side. Therefore, you will
never be able to equal out the strength of the muscles used on the
right and left sides. This will also put a limit on how strong you can
actually get. If you are going to use machines, make sure to either
balance it out with use of free weights and body weight exercises, or
try lowering the weight and doing single side sets!"
“What is one bad fitness habit you often see that people should break today?”
As usual the responses were phenomenal:
[Forgetting that] "It's
all on you.
There is nobody else to blame but you. Where you are in life is because of the choices you made. If you are not fit, if you are overweight, if your job sucks, if you kids don't listen, on and on and on. As soon as you realize that you are responsible for everything the sooner you can change your life for the better.”

exercise technique is a habit that must be broken if results are to be
achieved.
Learn from an expert and focus on technique as a priority before trying to
increase intensity.”

“Say
"no" more than you say "yes" this summer. Would you like
fries with that? Dessert? How about a beer? No, thank you. Saving the
"treat" meals or snacks for special occasions will help keep
thousands of calories off during these summer months full of parties and
outdoor events.”
"Stop doing cirque du soliel balancing acts and calling them functional training!!
Balancing
acts have been generally called 'functional training' by those who obviously
don’t know what functional is. Balance exercise have been touted as using
a greater amount of muscles, burn more calories, burn more fat, increase
strength, and host of other fitness and health benefits. ALL LIES!!
Balancing, for the most part, teaches you how to balance – not how to do
anything else. I can teach you how to balance on a board – that does not
mean you are going to play better soccer, or get lean for that matter.
Put
your feet on the ground and move as much weight as you can, as long as you can,
and as far as you can and you will get in shape, be functional, and if your diet is right – you'll look great too.

“Going
into the gym and attempting to demonstrate strength (i.e. quantity) instead of
trying to focusing on good technique (i.e. quality).
Sure you want to lift loads that
challenge you, but not loads so heavy that you can't maintain control of and
have to cheat to lift.
A good general guideline for the
goal of building muscle is to use the heaviest weight you can lift (using good
form, without cheating) for 8-12 reps... with each rep performed with a 2-3
second eccentric lowering portion.”

Fitness and wellness expert, speaker, producer, instructor, and Author of
“Setting
lofty goals. It's important to have the feeling of meeting your goals and
feeling accomplished. When we set lofty goals, like "losing 25 lbs",
we get discouraged when we don't see immediate results. Set short term goals
that you can accomplish, and you will build self esteem.”

TOT - Thoughts on Thursday - Exercise as a form of stress release

| angry from - istolethetv |
The best advice my Dad ever gave me was when I was leaving home to go to school at OU.
He said something to the effect of
"Son, if you ever get frustrated and angry while you're at school - go to the gym and take it out on the weights"
Boy has that advice saved me over the years!
As a black male people tend to have a stereotype of the "angry black male". It's a stereotype that I'm sad to say I often fit into in the past. But over the years that advice has worked wonders for me in attempts to control my anger or frustration with obstacles and circumstances I've had to overcome.
(Meditation has also helped a ton.)
When I've had a rough day, or a rough couple of days, I'll put in an extra long workout and feel right as rain.
If you've been having a rough time. I'd highly encourage you to go to the gym, go for a run or even do 100 pushups where you stand right now.
I'll bet you a nickel it will make you feel better.

OWW - Outside Wages Wednesday - 6/5/13
So It's been a long while since I've done an Outside Wages Wednesday but, I thought I'd give it a stab today since I finally have an update.
According to my Adsense account I actually earned some money last month. I know you're curious...
I earned $0.50 last month.
However, this month is already expected to quadruple that amount.
My traffic has been increasing steadily over the last two months, more than I've ever seen before. So that fifty cents may begin to grow and grow if the content continues to improve.
This is all with just one set link for google adwords that is not very targeted at all.
I intend to improve that shortly.

9 Recruiters Give Tips to new College grads
May and June are traditionally the months for graduation from learning institutions especially here in the western world. If a recent study is correct - new college grads may have an uphill battle when looking for a job. To help new graduates in their journey into the "real world" I reached out to some of the nations best recruiters to get their advice.
I asked them specifically:
"What is one tip you can offer for new graduates looking to find a job?"
They shared a wealth of knowledge which I'll pass on to you below:

“…Stay open to all Staffing Companies and explore Temp-to-Hire, as well as, Direct Hire positions. Nearly all Staffing Firms have a website where they can view all current job openings, can apply on-line for the jobs that they are qualified for, and can up-load their resume. It is always better to have a job, even if a Temporary job, when looking for the perfect fit that matches their degree. Employers are impressed with recent grads that take a position to build experience, earn money, while seeking their desired career.”

"The #1 tip for new grads who are job seeking is to network your way to a job via LinkedIn. Create a LinkedIn profile, connect to everyone you know and network with your connections to find a job. After you apply for a position online, always follow up with the recruiter on LinkedIn so that you can stand out from the pack and be noticed. Remember... it's not always WHAT you know, but WHO you know. LinkedIn lets you to take your networking to the next level!"

"Spend time on your resume! You will lose a lot more opportunities than you will gain by not having correct information on your resume(contact, email, address...etc).[By]not listing or updating changes in employment, or gaps in employment.[Having] grammatical errors on a resume your submitting.Invest in preparation and presentation of your resume by a career services agency if you don't have resume writer or want to use one.DO NOT lie on a resume about anything (example year a degree earned, etc)"
Ken Stevenson
Sr. Lead Technical Recruiter/Account Manager / NextGen Information Services
(St. Louis)
"Be professional. The vast majority of people I have interviewed of late from recent graduating classes have been highly unprofessional. Some examples, accepting cell phone calls during the interview. Responding to texts during the interview. Holding off the start of the interview to post a status on Facebook so that their friends know they are in an interview. Also, unreasonable expectations. Wanting to know how soon they will be promoted to a management position"
Jill Glist

“Consider smaller work environments. Many freshly-minted college grads are drawn to big name organizations and relatively sexy industries like film, publishing and fashion. However, highly desired places give new hires limited responsibilities that are associated with boring repetitive tasks. Membership in a smaller team is often associated with having multiple roles, which helps you identify what you love doing, and what you are good at. This helps you make informed decisions as you move along your ultimate career path.”
Ned Tyson

at Diversified Systems, Inc. (OH)
"Do not believe you are entitled."
Tyrell Ross

(Salt Lake City)
"Don't be picky. With the job market in the current state that it is in, just being able to find a position in which you can use your degree, is a blessing in disguise! Remember; be grateful and humble, yet be confident"
Chris Shaw
Technical Recruiter at Gap Inc.
(San Francisco)
"My advice to new graduates is to first have an idea of what you want to do and where you want to be. When new grads are out looking for work, but have no clue on what it is exactly they want to do, they will spend their whole time searching for something that they won't even know they've found once it is right in front of their faces."
Dawn E. Dzurilla
Founder & Managing Partner
Gaia Human Capital Partners
(New York City , NY)
"Thoroughly do your homework and due-diligence prior to any job interview. Prove to your potential employer that you too are thoughtfully evaluating their company and position while carefully assessing whether this company and career opportunity is ideally suited for your career. Furthermore, ask many types of questions about the position, its responsibilities and about the process of candidate selection. For example, who else is involved in making the decision to hire this person and when do you need this person to start?"
